British Gas Energy

British Gas Energy needed a powerful message to communicate what it means to be a part of the British Gas Energy family.

Following a challenging couple of years through the pandemic and various restructuring, British Gas Energy identified that employees needed reassurance and something that would unite them and bring them closer together. After developing their new aspirational culture and behaviours, they needed this to land in a way that helped employees understand how working together would positively impact their everyday work.

In order to help employees recognise the shift, the new culture program needed to kick off with an emotional narrative that engaged employees at a human level. The stand out objective was to create a video that would win the hearts and minds of employees, making them laugh and cry tears of happiness and pride. It also needed to be able to showcase the new branding and tone of voice, while communicating their three culture pillars – ‘making energy simple’, ‘in it together’, and ‘always learning’ – all underpinned by ‘setting the standard’.

To deliver this initial story, we crafted a beautifully written original poem to evoke a sense of pride and collaboration. We used real employees to recite the lines and shot the video across the British Gas Energy offices and employees’ work from home set-ups. The result was powerful. It really captured the spirit of the British Gas Energy family, and left employees feeling proud to have been a part of it.

The video kicked the wider brand refresh at the Centrica Strategy and Culture launch. It has since been shared and amplified through various channels by business leaders and colleagues from across the network – from townhalls, team calls, Yammer, digital signage and their intranet hub amongst others.

Making a meaningful difference

This emotional video helped to establish a sense of pride and collaboration among British Gas Energy employees, effectively communicating the company’s culture pillars and narrative. It showcased the new branding and tone of voice and set an aspirational standard for the business.
